Dr. Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar, while speaking on the topic "Why change of religion?" in Dadar (Bombay) on May 31, 1936, had said, "I want to say clearly that man is not for religion but for religion. It is for human beings. If you want to attain humanity, then convert to religion. If you want equality and respect, then change religion. If you want to earn a living with freedom, change religion. If you want to make your family and community happy, then change religion. " Similarly, on October 14, 1956, after converting to religion, Babasaheb had said, "Today I have been born again."

Let us now see that to what extent Babasaheb had mentioned the objectives and possibilities of conversion, to what extent they have been and are being fulfilled. First of all it would be appropriate to see how is the pace of conversion to Buddhism. According to the census of 2001, the population of Buddhists in India is about 80 lakhs, which is about 0.8 percent of the total population. In this, the population of traditional Buddhists is very less and it is only the new Buddhists made by converting from Hindu Dalits. Maharashtra has the highest number of Buddhists at 58.38 lakh, Karnataka has 4.00 lakh and Uttar Pradesh has 3.02 lakh. In the period from 1991 to 2001, there has been an increase of 24.54% in the population of Buddhists, which is more than the increase in all other religions. It is clear from this that there has been a huge increase in the population of Buddhists.

Now if we compare the qualitative change in the Neo-Buddhists with that of Hindu Dalits, then it is proved that Neo-Buddhists have progressed far ahead of Hindu Dalits in many areas, which confirms the fulfillment of Babasaheb's religious conversion objectives. If Neo Buddhists are compared with Hindu Dalits on the basis of data obtained from census of 2001, then Neo Buddhists are found far ahead of Hindu Dalits in the following areas:-

1. Sex Ratio: - The ratio of males to females is 953 per thousand among Neo-Buddhists, whereas this ratio is only 936 among Hindu Dalits. This proves that the position of women among the Neo-Buddhists is much better than that of Hindu Dalits. The high proportion of women among Neo-Buddhists corresponds to the equality status of women in Buddhism, while the proportion of women among Hindu Dalits is in line with the low status of women in Hinduism. This proportion of women among the Neo-Buddhists is more than that of Hindus, 936 of Muslims, 893 of Sikhs and 940 of Jains.

2. Sex Ratio of Children (up to 0-6 years):- According to the above census, the sex ratio of girls and boys of children up to 0.6 years in the Neo-Buddhists is 942 while in Hindu Dalits this ratio is 935. Here also the sex ratio of boys and girls is the same according to their place in religion. Among the Neo-Buddhists, this ratio is higher than 931 for Hindus, 936 for Muslims, 893 for Sikhs and 940 for Jains.

3. Education Rate: - The education rate among Neo-Buddhists is 72.7% while among Hindu Dalits this rate is only 54.7%. The education rate of Neo Buddhists is more than 65.1% of Hindus, 59.1% of Muslims and 69.7% of Sikhs. This clearly proves that due to giving more importance to knowledge and education in Buddhism, Neo-Buddhists have made a lot of progress in the field of education, which is much more than Hindu Dalits.

4. Education rate of women:- The education rate of women among the Neo-Buddhists is 61.7% while among Hindu Dalits this rate is only 54.7%. The education rate of women among the Neo-Buddhists is higher than that of Hindu women at 52.3%, and that of Muslims by 50.1%. From this it is proved that more attention is paid to the education of women in the Neo-Buddhists.

5. Work Participation Rate:- Work participation rate among Neo-Buddhists is 40.6% while among Hindu Dalits this rate is 40.4%. The work participation rate of Neo Buddhists is higher than that of Hindus 40.4, Muslims 31.3, Christians 39.7, Sikhs 37.7 and Jains 32.7%. This proves that the Neo Buddhists are at the fore in the category of regular job seekers as compared to all other classes, which has been possible only because of their higher education rate. Because of this, they are financially more prosperous than Hindu Dalits.

It is clear from the above comparative study that the sex ratio, education rate, women's education rate and work participation rate are ahead of not only Hindu Dalits but also Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Jains among the Neo-Buddhists. The main reason for this is that they become progressive by converting their religion and freeing themselves from mental slavery.

Apart from this, it has been found in the studies done by different researchers that the families and sub-castes of Dalits who have adopted Dr. Ambedkar and Buddhism have progressed more than Hindu Dalits. They have left the old dirty profession and adopted new clean profession. They have developed more inclination towards studies. They are free from fatalism and stand on their feet. They have become more self-respecting by getting rid of caste inferiority complex. They have also been freed from economic exploitation in the name of religion and they have improved their economic condition. The condition of their women and children is much better than that of Hindu Dalits.

From the above brief discussion it is proved that Buddhism is really the path of welfare and liberation of Dalits . The Neo-Buddhists have made a lot of progress in a short span of time as compared to the Hindu Dalits.
