१७ जुलै १९४७ रोजी मुंबई हुन रेवस च्या दिशेने रामदास नावाची बोट निघाली, ६६७ तिकिटे संपली होती त्यात बोटीचे कर्मचारी आणि बोट निघताना उड्या मारून बसलेले फुकटे असे ८०० च्या वर प्रवासी होते..
१९३६ साली मुंबई-गोवा महामार्ग बनला होता परंतु स्वातंत्र्यपूर्व काळात जलवाहतूक हीच स्वस्त आणि सोईस्कर होती अनेक छोटी मोठी बंदरे कुलाबा(आताचा रायगड) आणि रत्नागिरी जिल्ह्यात उदयास आली होती.स्कॉटलंड बनावटीची ही बोट भारतात जलवाहतुकी साठी उपयोगात होती.
दर्श आमवश्या(गटारी आमवश्या) च्या दिवशी शनिवार दि.१७ जुलै १९४७ ला भाऊच्या धक्यावरून स ८.३० वाजता रामदास बोट निघाली.सकाळी वातावरण स्वच्छ होते आणि त्यात शेख सुलेमान हा अनुभवी कॅप्टन होता.बोट सुरू होऊन अर्धा तास झाला आणि निसर्गाने रौद्ररूप धारण केले. अरबी समुद्रात उंचच उंच लाटा उसळू लागल्या, बोट हेलकांडू लागली प्रवासी सैरावैरा धावत होते बोट थोडी तिरपी झाली .शेख सुलेमान यांनी बोट सावरायाचा प्रयत्न केला पण त्याच दरम्यात एक उंच लाट बोटीवर आदळली आणि बोट जवळच असलेल्या काश्या खडकावर आपटली बोट फुटली सर्व प्रवासी समुद्रात फेकले गेले.७०० च्या वर प्रवाश्यानी जलसमाधी घेतली. समुद्रात हाहाकार माजला प्रेत तरंगत होते. ज्यांना पोहता येत होते ते वाचले,बोटीच्या कॅप्टनने खिडकीतून उडी मारल्याने तो वाचला होता.जवळच्या किनाऱ्यावरील कोळी बांधव धावून आले त्यांनी अनेक जणांचे जीव वाचवले.प्रेते बाहेर काढली काहींची ओळख पटली काही बेवारस झाले.कित्येक प्रेते समुद्रात वाहून गेली.
अलिबाग,रोहा,चौल,उरण,महाड,मंडणगड,रेवस,रेवदंडा,दाभोळ खेड इत्यादी ठिकाणाचे प्रवासी त्यात होते .अलिबाग मधील बारक्या मुकादम आणि पेण मधील गजानन मुंबईकर हे वाचलेले प्रवासी अजूनही हयात आहेत..
या घटनेला आज ७१ वर्षे पूर्ण होत आहेत आणि आजही कोकण वासीय ही घटना विसरलेली नाहीयेत.
१७ जुलै १९४७ हा दिवस कोकणवासीयांसाठी नाही तर संपूर्ण महाराष्ट्रासाठी काळा दिवस ठरलाआहे..

On July 17, 1947, the boat named Ramdas left for Mumbai Hun Revus, 667 tickets were sold out, there were over 800 passengers including the boat crew and free passengers who jumped off the boat.
The Mumbai-Goa highway was built in 1936, but in the pre-independence era, water transport was cheap and convenient, many small and big ports emerged in Colaba (now Raigad) and Ratnagiri districts. This Scottish-made boat was used for water transport in India.
On the day of Darsh Aamvashya (Gattari Aamvashya), Saturday 17th July 1947, the Ramdas boat left Bhau's Dhakya at 8.30 am. The weather was clear in the morning and Sheikh Sulaiman was the experienced captain. It was half an hour since the boat started and the weather turned cloudy. . In the Arabian Sea, high waves started to rise, the boat started to capsize, the passengers were running around, the boat tilted a bit. Sheikh Sulaiman tried to save the boat, but at the same time, a high wave hit the boat and the boat hit the nearby brown rock, the boat broke and all the passengers were thrown into the sea. Over 700 travelers took water samadhi. Dead bodies were floating in the sea. Those who could swim survived, the captain of the boat jumped out of the window to escape. The Koli brothers from the nearby shore came running and saved many lives. The bodies were pulled out. Some were identified and some were lost.
There were passengers from Alibag, Roha, Chaul, Uran, Mahad, Mandangad, Rewas, Revdanda, Dabhol Khed etc. The surviving passengers are Barkya Mukadam from Alibag and Gajanan Mumbaikar from Pen.
71 years of this incident are being completed today and even today the people of Konkan have not forgotten this incident.
July 17, 1947 has become a black day not only for the people of Konkan but for the entire Maharashtra.
